Welcome to the JANUARY edition
of UCHICAGO.EDU, a monthly e-bulletin bringing you
online news about the University of Chicago and its
larger community of alumni and friends.
CHICAGO
IN THE NEWS
* SEX AND
THE (WINDY) CITY
The typical Chicago resident is now single for about
half of his or her adult life--a shift that has a
major impact on cultural institutions and how people
interact. That's according to the three-year Chicago
Health and Social Life Survey, led by University sociologist
Edward O. Laumann. The first representative sampling
of sex life in a major urban center, the study has
implications far beyond the Windy City: http://www-news.uchicago.edu/releases/04/040109.sex-market.shtml
* RED PLANET
ROVER USES MAROON TECHNIQUE
Spirit--one of NASA's twin Mars rovers that landed
in the Gusev Crater January 3--contains an instrument
that, using a technique invented at Chicago, will
identify the chemical composition of Martian rocks
and soil: http://chronicle.uchicago.edu/040108/rover.shtml
RESEARCH
AT CHICAGO
* THE SPINAL
FRONTIER
Chicago researchers have discovered a signaling pathway
that controls the growth of nascent nerves within
the spinal cord, guiding them toward the brain. The
information gained in the study, led by neurobiologist
Yimin Zou and published in the December 12 Science,
may help restore function to people with paralyzing
spinal cord injuries: http://www.uchospitals.edu/news/2003/20031212-zou.html
* WHY DO
THE SCARED DIE YOUNG?
Researchers at the University's Institute for Mind
and Biology found that fear of new things can shorten
one's lifespan. In a study reported in the Proceedings
of the National Academy of Sciences, Norway rats (chosen
for their relatively short life span) that showed
fear of new surroundings were more likely to die than
their less timid counterparts: http://chronicle.uchicago.edu/040108/rats.shtml

INQUIRING
MINDS WANT TO KNOW...
* DID YOU
STEP ON THE PLAQUE?
If that question makes sense, you know a University
urban legend (step on the plaque of the University
seal in Mitchell Tower and you won't graduate on time).
For an upcoming issue the Magazine is tracking campus
lore and its relationship, if any, to reality. We'd
like your help. Send your favorite legend, and we'll
do our best to trace its genesis. Write: uchicago-magazine@uchicago.edu
