Welcome to the SEPTEMBER edition of UCHICAGO.EDU, a monthly e-bulletin bringing you online news about the University of Chicago and its larger community of alumni and friends.

TODAY @ UChiBLOGo

* PREPPING FOR O-WEEK
The Magazine's Web log goes back to school with the College's Resident Heads and Assistants as they prepare to greet the Class of 2008:

* GSB'S NEW BUILDING ALMOST OPEN FOR BUSINESS
The Graduate School of Business's $125 million, 415,000-square-foot building--located at 5807 South Woodlawn Avenue--is scheduled to open September 23 with the start of autumn quarter:
* SHORELAND TO GO CONDO
The historic Shoreland Hotel, a University residence hall since the 1970s, is set to be converted into condominiums by Chicago developer Kenard Corp. The building, however, will remain in use until the University has completed the construction of new on-campus student housing in 2007 or 2008:

RESEARCH AT CHICAGO

* MACRO ATTACK ON MICROORGANISMS
The University's Computation Institute will use an $18 million contract from the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases to establish a bioinformatics center that should accelerate research into the biology and evolution of deadly organisms--and develop methods for their control:
* BREAKTHROUGH IN OUTBREAK THEORY
A Chicago researcher has helped to create a mathematical model that offers a more reliable answer to a recurring environmental question: when will the next outbreak of gypsy moths occur? For details:

Chicago professors take to the road this fall to lecture in 11 cities. Here's the September and October line-up: September 14 in Cleveland, drama scholar David Bevington on "Shakespeare Faces Retirement"; October 17 in San Francisco, mathematician Robert Fefferman on "Infinity and Beyond"; October 17 in Pittsburgh, linguistic anthropologist Michael Silverstein on "Talking Politics: A Primer for This Season"; October 17 in New York, paleontologist Paul Sereno on "Dinosaurs on Drifting Continents"; and October 23 in Dallas and October 24 in Houston, economist Don Coursey on "Economic Value, the Value of Economists, and the Meaning of Life." For details and to register--plus information on November offerings in Boston, Los Angeles, Northern New Jersey, St. Louis, and Washington, DC:
* MEDICAL INSURANCE BRIDGES THE GAP
Are you between school and job--or job and job--and therefore between insurance plans? The Alumni Association sponsors short-term medical insurance for periods of 31 to 185 days. For more information about either short-term medical or life insurance, call Meyer and Associates at 800/635-7801, e-mail info@meyerandassoc.com, or go to:
* VOLUNTEER TO BE A CAREER CONTACT
Share your professional, academic, and volunteer experiences and insights. The online alumni careers network is a database of alumni contacts who help students and alumni learn more about a profession, institution, or activity. Conversations take place via phone, e-mail, written correspondence, or in-person meetings. To join the 7,000-plus alumni who volunteer their real-world expertise, go to:

*****
UCHICAGO.EDU is a joint project of the University of Chicago Magazine and the University of Chicago Alumni Association. Please send your comments and suggestions to uchicago-magazine@uchicago.edu.
*** If you do not want to receive mass e-mails from the University, please reply to this e-mail (uchicago-magazine@uchicago.edu) with your full name, e-mail address, and class/degree. This information, which will be used only to remove your name from the University's mass e-mail list, is needed because e-mail addresses are stored in our database based on a person's name and degree; there is no way to search the database using only an e-mail address.
*** If you are moving and want to update your address, please send an e-mail to alumni-gateway@uchicago.edu with your new contact information.
Please note: Because Uchicago.edu is an online news bulletin, some links may expire in the weeks and months after publication.
