Welcome to the FEBRUARY edition
of UCHICAGO.EDU, a monthly e-bulletin bringing you
online news about the University of Chicago and its
larger community of alumni and friends.
Your February/04 University of
Chicago Magazine is in the mail. It's also online.
Here's
a sampling from the FEBRUARY issue:
* EVERYBODY'S
A CRITIC
With 133,155 living alumni, the University of Chicago
has that many critical thinkers in its midst. For
some alumni, it's a full-time job: http://magazine.uchicago.edu/0402/features/index.shtml
* FULL SPEED
AHEAD
Unconventional and undeterred, biologist Lynn Margulis,
AB'57, has seen some of her once-revolutionary ideas
on evolution win mainstream acceptance. She's still
pressing on: http://magazine.uchicago.edu/0402/features/speed.shtml
* THEORY:
STILL ON THE TABLE
As Critical Inquiry turns 30, Chicago's influential
humanities journal continues to seek fresh ways of
viewing the world: http://magazine.uchicago.edu/0402/features/theory.shtml

* CONFERENCE
CONSIDERS FEMINISM'S FUTURE
A February 28 conference sponsored by Chicago's Center
for Gender Studies brings together writers, scholars,
and activists to rethink the history and goals of
the women's movement. "Back to the Future: Generations
of Feminism" features novelist Dorothy Allison,
activist Kate Millett, and Columbia University professor
Gayatri Spivak: http://www-news.uchicago.edu/releases/04/040211.feminism.shtml
* COMMUNICATIONS
BOOST: NEW VP FOR UNIVERSITY RELATIONS
Michael Behnke, vice president and dean of College
enrollment since 1997, has been named vice president
for university relations. Behnke, who has overseen
a 60-percent increase in undergraduate applications,
is charged with communicating Chicago's distinctive
place in higher education: http://chronicle.uchicago.edu/040205/behnke.shtml
RESEARCH

* EVOLUTION
OF A VIRUS
Studying changes in the genetic make-up of the SARS
virus, researchers in China and at the U of C have
strengthened evidence of its animal origins. They
also have charted three phases of the virus's molecular
evolution as it adapted to human hosts: http://www.uchospitals.edu/news/2004/20040129-SARSevolve.html
* BARBERSHOP:
THE SCHOLARLY SEQUEL
Political scientist Melissa Harris-Lacewell's four-month
study of a South Side barbershop--much like the fictional
one operated by Ice Cube in the popular 2002 film
Barbershop-- and other black venues will form the
basis of her forthcoming book, Barbershops, Bibles
and BET: Everyday Talk and Black Political Thought:

* ROAD SCHOLARS:
HARPER LECTURES HIGHLIGHT CHICAGO RESEARCH
Faculty are on the road again, bringing the Harper
Lecture series to alumni in cities nationwide. From
Shakespeare facing retirement to the quantum and the
cosmos, from the future of U.S.-China relations to
museums in the 21st century, Chicago professors will
lead discussions on their current research. For a
list of lectures--February through June--in 20 cities,
check: http://www.alumni.uchicago.edu/harper.html

* LIFE FOR
LIFE: NEW OPTIONS FOR INSURANCE
Most people carry life insurance through their employer
or their spouse's but with declining job security
and shrinking benefit packages, you could end up without
adequate coverage. The Alumni Association recently
introduced an enhanced life insurance plan offering
outstanding features and great rates. Alumni and their
families--including spouses, parents, and adult children--are
eligible to apply. For more information on life and
short-term medical insurance, visit: http://www.alumni.uchicago.edu/insurance.html
